Actually, "much of the copy the AP produces" wasn't "lifted." (I was there for a decade.) Stories in other newspapers were matched, verified and expanded upon by AP through our own reporting. Actual "pick ups" from other newspapers were reserved for true exclusives. Then, AP would follow up with its own updated version. The point being that there is a ton of original reporting done at AP that will be lost.

This is another sign of the crumbling newspaper industry. As a former journalist, I'm concerned with how our coverage will consist of fewer voices.

Hopefully journalists out of the business will find ways to practice their craft through such things as social media.
