While at Vimeo, we envisioned a different path for the music video. Traditional MTV-worthy production requires a large production budget and label backing. It yields but one artistic interpretation and tightens the label noose.

But what actually constitutes a ‘music video’? Apple TV commercials routinely launch careers for emerging artists overnight. Kanye West tossed a couple hundred bucks to Zach Galifianakis, and he produced a music video and comedic gem in the back of a barn.

Imagine the possibilities of the ‘music video’ if the vista is expanded beyond the traditional form factor. Almost any video on Vimeo that includes both personal video and music ought to be considered the future of music videos, particularly in pristine HD quality. Perhaps that right to openly integrate personal video with music costs the user a token license fee.

When the production possibilities expand, there is a cornucopia of revenue creation possibilities outside of (banner / pre-rolls) advertising. If online music is sold to Madison avenue, 2009 – 2010 may bankrupt the business of music.
