Isn't the Internet all about time-sapping, Joe? It's just that some of that might be pleasurable. I don't even mind learning about my friend's Cheerios consumption - if he says it in an interesting way (you should see some of my pals' text messages).

No, I wouldn't call someone to tell them I am eating a bowl of cheerios. But then again, I'm not calling them or emailing them. I'm sharing parts of my life, including the mundane bits, but not aggressively demanding attention like you imply.

To understand why this might be compelling in its own right, may I suggest this article from the NY Times magazine? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/magazine/07awareness-t.html

Sorry, but Twitter like other online apps are big wastes of time. No matter how interesting you make Twitter sound, and no matter how many inanimate objects can "tweet" (I could care less when a friends washing machine has finished it's spin cycle), it use saps time.

Ask yourself, would you call someone to tell them you are eating a bowl of Cheerios?

As you mention, it seems the Times has a stable of talented technologists. One of Vimeo's best developers is happily working there now too.
