For Eric Welch: Unfortunately, color would require a backlit screen and a LOT more power, translating into much lower battery life. It’s a matter of the technology available now.

Is it really the same price? I’m not positive, but I thought the cover (which I regard as a virtual necessity when traveling) was included with the original. Now it’s $30 additional.

Peter,
Any word as to upgrade breaks for original Kindle owners? I’m suspecting not.
Original design is clunky for sure, and it would be nice to see Kindle incentivize us original buyers to upgrade.

Forgive me for double posting, but I just remembered standing in the newsroom of the newspaper I was working for in 1992, and the owner of the paper said a very interesting thing. He described the way Whispernet works exactly in terms of newspaper delivery, and how the future of newspapers depended on just such a technology.

I guess I’m a stick in the mud. I really like the Kindle, but until it has a high-resolution color screen, I’m not interested. Life is in color. Black and white is cool, and great for documentary work. But being a photographer who shoots color, I just can’t bring myself to buy it yet.

That and I really like the audio book format as well. I have scores of Audible books and find that many books benefit from a dramatic reading. Of course, the New York Times (a.k.a. the Gray Lady – an apt name in this context) would not.
