I really enjoy my MacBook Air. I don't see how anyone could confuse a full service computer like it with a netbook. Those have much slower processors, smaller hard drives, cramped keyboards, and can only run two or three applications at a time.

I do find my second generation MacBook better than the original, which I used for a year. The newer version, which I've had for a little over a month, has a stronger, faster processor, and, most importantly, a separate graphics chip. I no longer get stuttering or freezes when playing video. The bigger hard drive, 120 GBs, is nice, too.

Specific to netbook, this is simple addition by subtraction.

Translation: we are not going to come out with a MAC netbook. We are going to come up with an iPhone OS based variant, as it already serves that "job"; namely, browsing on steroids. Bigger form factor of the iPod touch.

Seems obvious, but with Apple you can never be sure.

By "hottest part of the PC business" I suspect you mean in terms of volume. Because it certainly isn't going to contribute much to the bottom lines of the companies making them. What do they make per computer? Twenty, fifty bucks?

If they think they can make it up in volume, I have my doubts. Apple's vast profit margins in comparison more than make up for the miniscule profits they would pull in after the vast commitment of resources it would take to produce a Mac netbook.

If they made one that made enough money to justify it, people would accusing them of the old meme - the Apple tax - that analysts use when they don't know what else to say.

Reminds me of the old joke about the company that loses money on each unit sold. "But we make it up in volume!"

Indeed.

@Mark. Yep, they had a great quarter. Pretty amazing, really.
@Cathy I was debating getting the Air last fall but ended up getting the new 13" Macbook instead. Quite happy with it, with the exception of the no-button mouse pad, which I *still* haven't completely adapted to.

I find it amusing that Apple has such an issue with Netbooks when frankly the Macbook AIR is nothing more than a weekend convertible car type of computer anyway.

I'm not necessarily enamored of the netbooks either (mostly because they force me to use Windows), but having just played around with some netbooks (ones sporting WiMax tech) while in Portland have to say that in spite of the less than simple user experience, once I was up and running it was far more functional to use than my AIR ...

Peter, while I agree with your thesis that the earnings call was "news free," I have a slight different take; namely, that no news is GREAT news, something that I blogged about in:

ANALYSIS - Apple March Quarter Earnings Call: When No News is GREAT News. (http://bit.ly/2DmNZ)

Check it out if interested.
