Hey Ladies! Here’s the First Palm Pre Ad

Last week at the All Things D conference, Palm (PALM) investor Roger McNamee made a point of touting the Pre’s supposedly female-friendly attributes — like the fact that it has a mirror on the back. No mention of the shiny surface in this first TV ad touting the new phone, but this one certainly seems geared toward the xx set. Or maybe Palm has been stung by accusations that it’s an Apple (AAPL) ripoff and wanted to come out with some distinctly un-Jobsian marketing. You got me:

Note the nice shout out for Internet radio darling Pandora, by the way. Is there any mobile handset or carrier that doesn’t promote the music service?

Let me guess... she can't afford no shoes, as she is waiting for this mail-in rebate to be processed?

But then, I have to give Palm some credit for putting the mirror on the back. Most current Apple computers have the mirror on the wrong side.

Great ad, looks like the PRE is going to give the smart phone business some competition.

If I were Palm, I'd ask for my money back from the agency that did that monstrosity. I'm sure it played well to the egos of the suits who watched it, but it will NOT play well to normal people watching it on television. First, there's nothing to grab anybody's attention. Second, it's boring. Third, you have to pay way too much attention to figure out the point. (Watching a spot in isolation is a very different experience from seeing it amidst other ads on the tube.) Overall, it's horrid. The Pre seems like a decent (if not revolutionary) phone, but this ad could have been for a hundred other phones. It might look nice artistically, but it's really BAD advertising.

  • I like it.
    High production values.
Demonstrates the Prē's use for both personal and business lives.

How many ways can I say lame????
  • Luis Diaz
Oh, yes I should use my iPhones translated to say lame in 30 different languages; but all I need is one word: lame.
  • But, you're not Palm®, Dave.

Quite frankly, I hated the commercial. What crap, it doesn't do justice to the phone at all. It is funny how for "play" all they have to show is Pandora, no games at all. They allude to the touchstone charging thing with the lady on the stone, woohoo. Lousy commercial.
