[...] Virtual Goods + Mobile Payments = Small Market Worth Fighting For? | Peter Kafka | MediaMemo | AllTh... The real story here will be if and when the really big platforms for virtual goods — like, say, Facebook, News Corp.’s MySpace (NWS) and game companies like Electronic Arts (ERTS) — decide that they want to formally integrate one or more of the mobile payment guys, "Facebook isn’t involved in any of the microtransactions that any of its apps are generating, and the same goes for mobile payments — each app is free to work with whatever vendor it chooses. But that could change in the near future, as Mark Zuckerberg and company start testing their own payments platform. If there is going to be a big market for virtual goods bought via mobile payments, it could get carved up in the near future." (tags: facebook micropayments microtransactions mobile+payments) [...]

Pete – thanks for sandwiches. Industry research and our own revenue is bearing out that this is a big opportunity:

- Gartner – Doubling of Mobile Payments by 2010 (200 million people)
- 4billion mobile phones, 2billion credit cards globally
- $8Billion in virtual goods and games in 2009 (DFC/IDC)
- $1Billion in Mobile Payments transactions just in S. Korea last year
- Our revenue numbers across Facebook apps and games is why we’re able to attract top-tier VC’s.

Conversion rates are higher for mobile payments than credit cards so we have customers globally who buy because it’s their best option and those in top markets because it’s the easiest way to pay.

Lots thought selling books online or paying for things with your email address wouldn't work out. We hope this plays out the same way and that our global coverage, funding and team give us the best shot.
