It’s pretty obvious what MS’s response to this will be: more lock-in than ever. They are building all sorts of tie-ins between Office products and online services, all or most of which will only work if you are a “Genuine” Windows and Office user.

After a few updates we might find that some of these new Google services mysteriously don’t work properly for Windows users.

I recently signed up for an Officelive web site using Firfox under Linux, but once in, most of the functionality only works with Windows or Apple (and informal MS partner in my estimation) using specific versioned browsers.

Am I expected to believe that the geniuses at Microsoft can’t figure out how to interface with any current version of Firefox on any OS? They play dumb when it suits them.

This is wrongly being characterized as an aggressive move by Google. Wrong, wrong wrong. This is defense, and not necessarily one that will work, against MS’s well tested practice of yanking the rug out from competitors by finagling the OS against them.

Nothing would stop MS from vending a version of Office for this new OS. Had the DoJ followed through in the 90s, that’s exactly what the Applications-only version of MS would be working on now.
