Get an iPhone into their hands.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s one conclusion you can draw from a new survey showing that people who own Apple (AAPL) handsets are more willing to pay for stuff than the average Internet surfer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a U.K. survey, conducted by the <a href="http://www.olswang.com/news.asp?sid=136">Olswang</a> media law firm, but my hunch is that you&#8217;d see similar results in the U.S. And given that consumers look much less likely to pay for stuff than publishers and distributors would like, it&#8217;s worth chewing on. <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/nov/25/iphone-pay-online">Guardian</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The survey showed that 58% of people would pay to access online a film just released in cinemas, 52% would pay for access to a film that will not be on DVD for at least two months and 40% would pay to access a film which is already on DVD or pay-TV. Looking at solely iPhone users, however, those figures jump to 73%, 67% and 54% respectively&#8230;.</p>
<p>News content, however, remains a tough online sell. The survey asked how willing consumers would be to buy a newspaper article or column which could be read on a computer or portable device such as a phone or e-reader. Only 19% of respondents expressed any willingness to pay&#8211;though that did increase to 30% among iPhone users.</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;ve repeatedly been skeptical that consumers will pay for something solely because it&#8217;s on a mobile device&#8211;this is the key idea behind the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091118/conde-nasts-offering-for-apples-mystery-tablet-wired-magazine/">magazine industry&#8217;s</a> <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091002/publishers-like-time-inc-s-hulu-for-magazines-proposal-what-will-apple-and-amazon-say/">digital</a> <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091111/strength-in-numbers-news-corp-may-join-time-inc-s-hulu-for-magazines/">plans</a>&#8211;but I do think there are some cases where this might work.</p>
<p>My own anecdotal confirmation: My household just dropped $6 for three Pixar shorts for an iPhone 3G in a desperate attempt to provide some electronic babysitting/soothing. This, despite the fact that everything we bought is also available for free on YouTube. When you need the stuff, you can&#8217;t be dependent on a wireless connection.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s the pitch Apple has been making to TV networks in recent weeks. The company is trying to round up support for a monthly subscription service that would deliver TV programs via its multimedia software, multiple sources tell me.</p>
<p>Apple (AAPL) isn&#8217;t tying the proposed service to a specific piece of hardware, like its<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091029/new-from-apple-apple-tv-3-0/"> underwhelming Apple TV box</a> or its long-rumored tablet/slate device. Instead, the company is presenting the offer as an extension of its iTunes software and store, which already has <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-itunes-9/">100 million customers</a>.</p>
<p>A so-called &#8220;over the top&#8221; service could <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090820/apple-triple-play-itunes-app-tv-and-apple-television/">theoretically rival the ones most consumers already  buy from cable TV operators</a>&#8211;if Apple is able to get enough buy-in from broadcast and cable TV programmers.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a big if: Apple has told industry executives it wants to launch the service early next year, but I have yet to hear of a single programmer that has made a firm commitment to the company, which has tasked iTunes boss Eddy Cue with promoting the idea.</p>
<p>Industry executives believe that if anyone jumps first, it will be Disney (DIS), since CEO Bob Iger has shown a willingness to experiment with Apple and iTunes in the past: In 2005, Disney was the first player to sell its programming on iTunes, via a-la-carte downloads. And Apple CEO Steve Jobs is Disney&#8217;s largest single shareholder, a result of Disney&#8217;s 2006 acquisition of Jobs&#8217;s Pixar animation studio. Apple didn&#8217;t respond to requests for comment.</p>
<p>Network executives I&#8217;ve talked to are intrigued by the idea&#8211;they are eager to find new revenue streams&#8211;but are also wary, for several reasons.</p>
<p>Cable networks, for instance, don&#8217;t want to threaten existing relationships and subscription fees from cable providers like Comcast (CMCSA). And programmers are also worried about the effect a subscription service would have on advertising revenue: Even if the service didn&#8217;t distribute TV programs until after their initial air date, that could cut into ratings, which now measure viewership over the course of several days.</p>
<p>But the move to deliver TV and movies over the Web is already well under way. Netflix (NFLX), for instance, already bundles free streaming movie and television along with its disc-by-mail subscription service. iTunes and Amazon (AMZN) rent movies on a one-off basis, and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube is trying out the same thing. Meanwhile, Hulu, the joint venture between GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC, News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox, and ABC, is figuring out how to launch a paid service that may include rentals, paid downloads or subscriptions.</p>
<p>So Apple&#8217;s proposed subscription service, which the company has floated in the past, is no longer a huge stretch. Says one executive briefed on the company&#8217;s plans: &#8220;I think they might get it right this time.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/c.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2987" title="3-d" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/c.jpg" alt="" width="186" height="250" /></a>One of the biggest themes at the Consumer Electronics Show this year (besides the fact that the town is comparatively empty) is 3-D. A host of hardware and software companies insists that a new version of the technology is ready for prime time, and that it won&#8217;t be a &#8220;Creature from the Black Lagoon&#8221; novelty: The glasses are better, the images will burst off the screen and into your lap, etc.</p>
<p>At <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090108/sony-ceo-howard-stringer-at-ces-i-wish-i-could-tell-you-that-im-recession-proof/">Sony&#8217;s keynote presentation</a> yesterday, CEO Howard Stringer devoted a good chunk of his presentation to the wonders of the technology and showed off a 3-D short from Disney&#8217;s (DIS) Pixar. And last night a few hundred of us got another demo&#8211;a broadcast of the Florida/Oklahoma BCS championship game, on a giant screen, live, in 3-D.</p>
<p>This sounded great in theory. A brace of companies, including <a href="http://www.cinedigm.com/">Cinedigm</a>, <a href="http://www.3alitydigital.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx">3ality</a>, Carmike Cinemas (CKEC), News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox and Sony (SNE), partnered up to create a special 3-D broadcast that went out to a handful of movie theaters across the U.S. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones and this Web site.) And they&#8217;d like to replicate this a dozen times a year for other special occasions: Other big sports events, concerts and the like.</p>
<p>This stuff is still a bit rough around the edges. The 3-D cameras seem to have a hard time keeping up with high-speed action like a pass, some images didn&#8217;t seem to focus that well, and the broadcast, which was created separately from the show everyone else in the country saw, seemed to be several cameras short&#8211;not enough overhead shots of the action, etc. But that&#8217;s OK: CES is usually stuffed with vaporware that never makes it to market, so we&#8217;re willing to cut an actual product some slack.</p>
<p>The bigger question is whether the 3-D experience will be amazing enough to convince people to pay money to watch a big game at a theater instead of their living rooms or at a sports bar. I&#8217;m not convinced, but I&#8217;m willing to give it another shot.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s some video footage from the event; I can&#8217;t show you what the broadcast looked like because my not-so trusty Flip Mino doesn&#8217;t have any kind of flash. And there&#8217;s not much point in watching a clip of a 3-D broadcast in 2-D anyway, right? Instead, I chatted with Cinedigm CEO Bud Mayo, recent <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/12/mark-cubans-newest-pickup-a-movie-chain-ckec">Carmike investor Mark Cuban</a> (more from him later), and <a href="http://twitter.com/innonate">Nate Westheimer</a>, a New York-based tech guy around town who filled in as my volunteer cameraman and one-man focus group.</p>
