Want to see Condé Nast's not-so-secret plans to produce tablet-friendly editions of its magazines? Get yourself to New York's Meatpacking District. Or check out this grainy YouTube clip.

What will Condé Nast magazines look like once they show up on tablet computers made by Apple (AAPL), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and others?

Condé has a demo video it has been showing to advertisers, employees and plenty of other people, including me. The demo gives you a pretty good overview of what the publisher and Adobe (ADBE), which is building the software to produce and view the magazines, have in mind. But the publisher has turned down my request to show the clip to my readers.

This doesn’t mean you can’t see it, though. If you’re in New York City, you can troop down to the promotional “store” Wired magazine sponsors each year, located this time in the Meatpacking District (keep an eye peeled for the Betaworks guys). The publisher is showing off at least part of the clip there, and you can see some of it in this YouTube clip below (thanks to Brian Chen for spotting):

Obviously, it’s a much better experience if you can watch the video directly, instead of through someone else’s video camera. Also, I think you’d prefer to see it outside of the store, where you’re not subjected to slit-your-wrists techno music. So perhaps this will prompt the Condé folks to put the entire clip out in public.

In the meantime, here’s a gallery of “Saturday Night Live” cast members and other sort-of-famous people checking out last year’s store.

I get the feeling many folks aren’t working today. Which means that those of who you are can probably sneak in an extra couple minutes to entertain yourselves with Web video. So here’s Tina Fey on last night’s episode of “30 Rock,” performing her homage to Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs:

Entertaining. Like the cadence and the walk. But for my money, the best faux Steve is Fred Armisen, Fey’s old castmate on “Saturday Night Live.” Here he is touting the iPhone:

Sadly, I can’t find Armisen’s best Jobs impersonation, where he introduced the iPod “Inviso.” What’s up with that, NBC.com and Hulu?

UPDATE: Fabio M. Zambelli helpfully passes along this link to the missing clip. He also notes as many of our readers outside the U.S. do, that he can’t watch Hulu clips. The Hulu people say they’re working on it, Fabio!

Lots of news emanating from Hulu today–but nothing ground-moving. That could still come in the near future: I keep hearing that the joint venture between GE’s (GE) NBC and News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox is getting close to a deal to bring Disney’s (DIS) ABC into the fold. But no confirmation yet. And no one seems hopeful that CBS (CBS) will come aboard anytime soon. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)

In the meantime, Hulu wants us to know that:

It’s now the biggest video site that isn’t Google’s (GOOG) YouTube, at least according to one count. Nielsen’s VideoCensus pegs the site’s February traffic at 309 million video views, which puts it ahead of News Corp.’s MySpace and Yahoo (YHOO). But as AdAge’s Michael Learmonth notes, it’s still not on the same playing field as YouTube, which generated 5.2 billion views during the same period.

It’s not just a video site, it’s a social network. Or at least, it now has some social-network-like features, like the ability to share favorite clips with your pals. TV.com, Sling.com, Joost, et al, do something similar. The good news is that Hulu lets you import connections from Facebook, MySpace, Google, etc. The bad news is that this won’t appease broadcast and cable TV executives who worry that Hulu takes eyeballs away from their offerings, despite what someone told The Wall Street Journal today.

Hulu users really, really like their “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s clips accounted for nine of the ten most emailed clips in the last year and eight of the ten most viewed videos that were embedded in other sites. Like this one.

Why have Hulu's videos disappeared from TV.com, the Hulu-like video site CBS recently relaunched? Perhaps because Hulu isn't pumped up about supplying its content to a competitor--especially one that won't supply its content to Hulu.

Web video mystery of the day: Why have Hulu’s videos disappeared from TV.com, the Hulu-like video site that CBS recently relaunched?

I’ll confess up front that I don’t know, and the two companies themselves aren’t being helpful in explaining the kerfuffle. But here’s the best guess from online video folks who know both companies: Hulu isn’t pumped up about supplying its content to a competitor–especially since CBS isn’t supplying its content to Hulu.

For what it’s worth, Hulu, the joint venture between News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox and GE’s (GE) NBC, offers up this statement: “Hulu has contractual rights with regards to our relationship with TV.com and we are exercising those rights. Out of respect for their confidentiality, we will not disclose our discussions.” CBS offers up a more concise “no comment.” (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)

[UPDATE: CBS weighs in with a saber rattling statement on Thursday afternoon: “CBS Interactive is well within its rights to stream Hulu video content on TV.com under its agreement with Hulu. We are evaluating our next steps at this time.” ]

The background: CNET, which CBS (CBS) purchased last summer, has owned the TV.com domain for several years. This year, CBS relaunched the site as a Hulu-like video portal. Included in the launch was video from Hulu itself, which syndicates its stuff to dozens of sites, including MySpace, Time Warner’s (TWX) AOL, and Sling.com.

The wrinkle: Hulu’s distribution deal was inked with CNET when the company wasn’t owned by CBS. And CBS doesn’t provide its video to Hulu. You can connect the dots here, and that’s what several folks I’ve talked to today are doing. If either one of the companies decides to become more expansive, I’ll update when appropriate.

In the meantime, here’s a clip of “NCIS,” a CBS show you can’t get on Hulu:

And a clip from last weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” an NBC show you can no longer see on TV.com:

YouTube may have been the only big Web site that didn't provide a live stream of Barack Obama's inauguration. But its users are rectifying this as we speak: They're currently uploading clips of the ceremony to the site at a staggering pace.

YouTube may have been the only big Web site that didn’t provide a live stream of Barack Obama’s inauguration. But its users are rectifying this as we speak: They’re currently uploading clips of the ceremony to the site at a staggering pace of 3.52 videos per minute, according to video tracking service TubeMogul.

To put that in context, TubeMogul normally tracks uploads by the hour: Last fall, when the “Saturday Night Live” Sarah Palin skits were the hottest thing on the Web, users were sending clips to the site at a rate of 9.5 per hour, says marketing director David Burch.

Yet another testament to Google’s (GOOG) reach, and to the powerful appeal Obama has to the Web generation. And, if we’re going to get technical about it, yet another example of how hard it is for the site to grapple with copyright issues–if copyright holders wanted to, they could probably require the site to take down the majority of these clips for copyright violations, since they’re being lifted from broadcasters’ and other news organizations’ streams. But I’m betting these clips stay up.

In any case, I can’t imagine there’s anyone out there who didn’t see the event live. So here’s a different take from a YouTube uploader, Achangein09, who contributed this clip a few minutes ago:

Another would-be "viral video" from NBC's show that NBC can't show you on NBC.com or Hulu. Blame a copyright issue (of course), and look for it on YouTube instead.

I didn’t see “Saturday Night Live” last week, but NewTeeVee informs me that there was one highlight: Former “Doogie Howser, M.D.” star Neil Patrick Harris and a cast of of dozens performing the theme song to “Doogie Howser, M.D.”

So why didn’t I embed a clip of the sketch from NBC.com or Hulu, the joint venture between GE’s (GE) NBC and News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox? Because NBC didn’t have permission from whoever actually owns the rights to the theme song, NBC confirms. (News Corp is the owner of Dow Jones and this Web site.)

Bummer! Especially since the clip was one of the show’s “Digital Shorts,” which are designed to be viewed on the Web, à la “Lazy Sunday.”

You can still find versions of it on Google’s (GOOG) YouTube, though NBC’s lawyers are busy hunting them down–don’t be surprised if the following clip doesn’t work by the time you get to it:

If you can’t see it, don’t despair: These music clearance issues have tripped up “Saturday Night Live”/NBC before, and the clip in question–Andy Samberg and the dude from Maroon 5 doing “Iran So Far”–eventually made it back on the official Web.* (Another reason not to despair, at least in my humble opinion: The Doogie clip isn’t going to make you laugh outloud, anyway.)

The bigger point: Even when TV/Hollywood “get it,” they still can’t always serve up their best stuff to Web viewers because copyright laws and digital distribution still don’t synch up.

And much more often, the people who make TV shows and movies aren’t interested in serving that stuff up–legally, for free–anyway. Hulu was only able to show one full episode of “Mad Men,” AMC’s much discussed but little watched show about advertising. And it’s only going to be able to show “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” a cult sitcom from FX that owes some of its success to the video site, for a few more weeks.

So maybe that’s a cautionary tale for companies like Boxee that envision a future where you get all your TV shows and movies from the Web with the support of the TV networks and Hollywood. Or more likely, a cautionary tale for TV and Hollywood, which still aren’t ready to let their customers watch their stuff when and where they want to see it.

[UPDATE: As I'd hoped, NBC legal worked it out. See below]

The video site saw a huge surge in interest during the fall. But its post-election audience may not have eroded as much as we thought.

File under “interesting and a bit surprising”: Earlier this month I cited comScore data that showed that traffic to red-hot Hulu had fallen off from October to November. That made sense, because the site had shown a huge spike due to interest in the “Saturday Night Live” Sarah Palin clips, and those became less interesting after Election Day.

But here are data that show that Hulu’s post-Sarah letdown may not have been as bad as we thought. The source: comScore.

The measurement company’s “Video Metrix” survey, out today, shows that Hulu’s unique viewers fell 6.4 percent from October to November. The comScore Media Metrix data I cited earlier showed a 10.8 percent drop (click to enlarge).

That’s because the two data sets are measuring two different things. ComScore (SCOR) analyst Andrew Lipsman’s explanation:

While Media Metrix data only accounts for visitors to the property URL, Video Metrix accounts for viewers across the expanded network of sites where video might be viewed. So while only visitors to Hulu.com are counted in Media Metrix, viewers of Hulu videos anywhere on the Internet would be credited in Video Metrix.”

In other words: The new data also include the audience from Hulu distribution partners like MySpace, as well as all those blogs that became de facto distribution partners by taking advantage of Hulu’s handy embedding feature. Once you factor them in, the joint venture between News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox and GE’s (GE) NBC becomes much stickier. (But keep in mind that the distribution deals–at least the official ones–cut into Hulu’s slim margins).

Note also that the number of videos viewed dropped by an even smaller margin–3.6 percent. And note that engagement numbers–minutes per viewer and minutes per video–increased during the same time. Finally, note that all of this comes after a huge spike from September to October–uniques had jumped 91 percent–which means that the site was still able to keep most of its new audience.

It’s still worth watching to see how much of that audience sticks around over the long haul. Hulu’s most popular clips for December are almost entirely composed of “Saturday Night Live” bits. And unless I missed something, bits like this Obama parody aren’t generating the same kind of excitement that the Palin clips did. But I gotta say–it sure is easy to embed these suckers.

Last summer, you couldn't buy an ad at red-hot Hulu if you wanted to. Just like everything else in online ad sales, that has changed in just a few months.

We’ve already noted that Hulu’s audience seems to have tailed off. Now it seems as if its advertisers are less interested in the site, too.

In a roundup story about the state of online advertising, The Wall Street Journal notes that the video Web site says revenue is still increasing. But Hulu, owned by GE’s (GE) NBC and Fox, owned by News Corp. (NWS) (which also owns this Web site), no longer claims to be “sold out”:

Hulu…says its overall revenue is growing month to month, and that revenue per minute of video watched grew in November from October. But while advertising on the site was sold out as recently as August, it is no longer.

‘Clearly the environment today is different than it was four months ago,’ says Hulu Chief Executive Jason Kilar, adding that the venture ‘will be ahead of plan for 2008.’”

Hulu’s previous claims about being “sold out” were always a bit head-scratching for people who used the site with any frequency: Sure, you were likely to see an ad (good bet: It was from Esurance) when you first loaded up a “Saturday Night Live” clip. But the more video you watched, the more likely you were to see freebie public service announcements from the Ad Council.

It’s hard to get worked up over this development. That’s partly because the notion of any Web site being “sold out” is a bit of a theoretical construct: The more people who visit the site, the more inventory it has to sell to advertisers–if the publisher wants to sell it.

And it’s also hard to read much into this because the Web video ad market has become a total crap shoot. Hulu says sales for the fourth quarter are still up over last year, and online execs at CBS (CBS) and at Disney’s (DIS) ABC say the same thing. But they have little idea what to expect for next year. Which makes them just like everyone else selling online ads.

Meanwhile, here’s a Hulu clip featuring the final “Saturday Night Live” appearance from the excellent Amy Poehler, who left the cast after last weekend’s show. She’s getting ready to launch her own NBC sitcom:

File under "interesting, but understandable": After a flurry of election-related interest in October, traffic to red-hot Hulu fell off in November. Blame Sarah Palin--or the lack of her.

File under “interesting, but understandable”: After a flurry of election-related interest in October, traffic to red-hot Hulu fell off in November. Blame Sarah Palin–or the lack of her.

ComScore says that traffic to the joint venture between News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox and GE’s (GE) NBC fell 10.8 percent from October to November, dropping from 5.3 million unique visitors to 4.8 million. (Hulu’s PR team notes that ComScore’s separate “VideoMetrix” panel assigned a much bigger audience to the site last month: 24 million uniques. They haven’t put out November numbers yet but I’ll update when I get them).

ComScore (SCOR) says U.S. traffic at Google’s (GOOG) YouTube also dropped that month, but by a much smaller margin–0.006 percent. And since YouTube is a global property, those numbers are less telling. Hulu, meanwhile, is a U.S.-only site (much to the dismay of blog commenters).

Apologies for not figuring out how to show you this data in graph form–I’ll figure it out eventually. For now, click to enlarge.

This makes plenty of sense: Hulu was one of two places were you could (legally) see the “Saturday Night Live” Sarah Palin clips, which were huge sensations. The other one, NBC.com, dropped a whopping 50 percent–from 14.1 million to 7.2 million, comScore says.

And all sorts of Web sites that enjoyed a bump during the run-up to the election have tailed off a bit since then. ComScore says the Huffington Post, for instance, is down 20 percent– from five million uniques to four million. Presumably Oak Investment Partners was aware of that before it sank $25 million into the site last month.

Meanwhile, Hulu still shows impressive growth. If I could have figured out how to create a graph, you’d see that Hulu has still had a huge run-up since March, when it left beta.

Speaking of beta, video site/blog punching bag Joost has logged its first full month of traffic since its Web video player became open to the public. ComScore pegs traffic at 1.1 million uniques; the company says that its data, which include global traffic, show 2.1 million.

Those aren’t huge numbers–I can think of several text-only blogs, which cost a lot less to build and operate than Joost’s site, that garner more eyeballs than that–but they’re not terrible either. Still, Joost has a lot of ground to catch up if it wants to give Hulu a run for its money.

Last but not least! Here’s an excellent clip from the smart folks at the Onion. It’s a month old, but news to me. Enjoy:

Odds are you didn’t. The video site’s first attempt at a live-streamed event–a sort of awards show + concert–seems to have drawn a peak audience of about 700,000 people, if the folks at Mogulus are interpreting Akamai’s data correctly.

That is almost certainly a record for a Web-only event. But it’s a nonevent by mainstream entertainment standards.

A poorly performing show on network TV, by comparison, draws millions of viewers: Recall that GE’s (GE) NBC canceled “Quarterlife,” the soap opera that started out on MySpace, after it drew an audience of 3.1 million in its debut. A bona fide hit draws many millions more: Last Thursday’s episode of “CSI,” for instance, garnered more than 18 million eyeballs.

Not fair to compare a weeknight audience to one on Saturday nights? OK. Try this: Last year, before anyone had ever heard of Sarah Palin, “Saturday Night Live” was averaging more than five million viewers.

You can’t blame the modest audience on a lack of effort on YouTube’s part. The video site generated plenty of publicity in advance of the event. And heavy promotion on the site itself all but compelled visitors who ventured onto YouTube last night to check it out.

Part of the issue, I think, is that while the show had a smattering of sort-of-popular singers (Katy Perry, Akon) there was no one really huge. Most of the show was dedicated to viral video stars/oddities like Tay Zonday. And the point of viral videos is that you see them on your own time, serendipitously: You take a couple minutes out of work on a Tuesday afternoon to watch Tay Zonday sing “Chocolate Rain” because your friend sends you the link. Not because he’s appearing live on Saturday night.

Could YouTube rustle up a bigger audience for a live event in the future? Absolutely. It’s one of the biggest Web sites in the world, so if it had a truly compelling show, instead of a niche event, it wouldn’t be hard to get the word out. And if parent company Google (GOOG) wanted to lend a promotional hand, game over.

So maybe that’s coming down the pike. In the meantime, if you didn’t tune in last night, here’s a sample of what you missed: Katy Perry singing “Hot ‘N Cold.”

That was fast.

The recent resurgence of "Saturday Night Live," spurred by Republican VP candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin and her comic doppelgänger, Tina Fey, may already be over.

How do I know? Well, there's the gut check--I watched most of Saturday's show, which didn't feature Palin or Fey, and it was a snoozer (the absence of new mom Amy Poehler probably didn't help either).

But we can also gauge the reaction of Internet users, thanks to the good folks at TubeMogul, a small start-up that specializes in tracking Web video views.

And the results are not so good.

While SNL's sketches this season have become watercooler hits in both legal form (NBC.com, Hulu) and not-so legal form (YouTube), this weekend's show isn't making an impact, at least so far: TubeMogul says YouTube users are only trying to post SNL clips at the rate of about one per hour, since the show aired Saturday night.

That's down from an average of about six per hour for the other shows SNL has aired this season.

Could it be that NBC--owned by GE (GE)--is just doing an extra-zealous job of keeping illegal copies of its clips off of a video site owned by Google (GOOG)? Mmmmmmaybe.

But probably not: Last Thursday's SNL special, which featured not only Tina Fey, but also show veteran Will Ferrell as President George W. Bush, was a huge YouTube hit, generating 9.5 videos per hour and 1.85 million views in 24 hours.

Meanwhile NBC.com's own data confirm that this weekend's show fell flat: The site says the two political clips posted below have generated a mere 460,000 views since Saturday.

Compare that to Thursday's showstopper, currently at 1.5 million and counting.

I'd bet the remainder of our 401(k) that SNL's staff and cast are going to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama next month.

But the bean counters behind the show are obviously rooting for the ticket of Sen. John McCain and Palin.
